Ultimate Guide To Sustainable Laundry Detergent & Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips

Let’s face it, doing laundry isn’t exactly the highlight of anyone’s day, but did you know your laundry routine could be harming the planet more than you realize?

From bulky plastic detergent bottles clogging landfills to energy-guzzling machines and synthetic microfibers polluting waterways, laundry has a surprisingly large environmental footprint. But here’s the good news: with a few smart swaps and habits, you can clean your clothes and clean up your impact.

Choosing a truly sustainable laundry detergent (and supporting refill and reuse models along the way) is one of the easiest places to start. Whether you’re just beginning your sustainability journey or looking to level up your routine, this guide will help you make informed, planet‑friendly choices.

What Actually Makes a Detergent Eco‑Friendly?

Not all “eco‑friendly” detergents are created equal. A green label or leafy logo doesn’t necessarily mean a product is safe for people or the planet. True sustainability comes down to ingredients, packaging, and business practices.

Here’s what to look for when choosing a better, more sustainable laundry detergent:

Biodegradable formulas:

These break down naturally without harming ecosystems.

Plant‑Based, Non‑Toxic Ingredients

Conventional laundry detergent is far more than simple soap. It often contains harsh chemicals that can negatively impact human health and the environment. Some of the most concerning include:

  • Phosphates: Linked to cardiovascular (heart) disease and osteoporosis. When released through wastewater, phosphates are especially harmful to marine ecosystems.
  • Bleach: Commonly used to whiten fabrics, bleach releases toxic fumes that can cause respiratory distress. Direct contact with skin or eyes may result in painful, caustic burns.
  • Formaldehyde: A chemical often associated with preserving biological specimens. Classified by the EPA as a Class B1 probable carcinogen, formaldehyde has been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
  • Ammonium Sulfate & Quaternary Ammonium Sanitizers: Extremely harsh cleaning agents that are both corrosive and toxic. Even minimal exposure can irritate or damage the eyes, skin, and lungs.
  • 1,4‑Dioxane (also listed as Diethylene Dioxide, Diethylene Ether, or Dioxan): One of the most concerning additives found in cleaning products. This chemical is a known carcinogen, poses a combustion risk, and exposure can cause serious harm to the body.

Choosing plant‑based alternatives helps protect your health while keeping these toxins out of our water systems.

Plastic‑Free or Refillable Packaging

Packaging matters. In the U.S. alone, nearly 1 billion plastic detergent jugs are purchased each year and only about 10% are successfully recycled.

That’s why refill and reuse systems are so important. Refilling the same container again and again dramatically reduces plastic waste and keeps packaging out of landfills. At The Unwaste Shop, we make refilling easy by offering trusted, high‑quality detergents at our refill station, so you can skip the single‑use plastic entirely and trust that the products are good for you AND the planet!

No dyes, phosphates, or synthetic fragrances

These additives often cause skin irritation and environmental harm. Look for those that are either unscented or use essential oils to scent the products! When you shop with us, that’s what you’ll find!

Transparent Certifications

Certifications can be incredibly helpful when you’re trying to cut through greenwashing and make more informed choices. While no certification is perfect, the following labels are widely respected and can signal higher standards for ingredients, ethics, and environmental responsibility:

USDA Organic

This certification indicates that a product’s ingredients are derived from agricultural sources grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. For cleaning products, USDA Organic certification helps ensure that plant-based ingredients are sourced responsibly and processed with strict oversight, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals for both people and ecosystems.

EcoCert

EcoCert is an internationally recognized certification that evaluates products based on renewable ingredients, biodegradability, manufacturing practices, and environmental impact. Products certified by EcoCert must meet rigorous standards around ingredient sourcing, transparency, and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

Leaping Bunny

The Leaping Bunny logo signifies that a product and its ingredients are 100% cruelty-free. Companies certified by Leaping Bunny commit to no animal testing at any stage of product development and are regularly audited to ensure ongoing compliance.

Certified B Corporations (B Corps)

B Corporation certification goes beyond a single product and looks at the entire business. Certified B Corps meet rigorous standards for social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. This includes how a company treats its workers, sources materials, engages with communities, and minimizes environmental impact.

Becoming a B Corp means a company has legally committed to balancing profit with purpose, using business as a force for good rather than prioritizing growth at any cost. Did you know that Randi learned a lot about sourcing and responsibility through working for a B Corp? That journey is a major part in her desire to continue putting the planet and people over profit!

FSC® or PEFC Certified Forests

When you see FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) labels, it means paper-based packaging (like cardboard boxes or paper detergent containers) comes from responsibly managed forests.

These certifications ensure that forests are harvested in ways that:

  • Protect biodiversity and wildlife habitats
  • Respect the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities
  • Prevent illegal logging and deforestation
  • Support long-term forest health

For laundry products, FSC® or PEFC certification helps ensure that even paper packaging is part of a regenerative system, not contributing to deforestation or ecosystem loss.

Together, these certifications help consumers identify products that prioritize safer ingredients, ethical treatment of animals, and more responsible production practices, making it easier to choose options that align with your values.

Why Refilling (and Who You Refill With) Matters

Choosing a sustainable detergent isn’t just about what you buy, it’s also about who you support and purchase from. It’s easy to push the Bezos Button, but that also means it’s easy to disregard how the product is manufactured.

Large corporations often prioritize convenience and profit over people, transparency, and environmental responsibility. Many rely on questionable ingredients, greenwashing tactics, and single‑use plastic packaging.

At The Unwaste Shop, we believe real change happens when we support small, values‑driven companies that put people and the planet first. That’s why our refill station features trusted brands like Meliora and MamaSuds. How do we know they are legit? Well, Mike and Kate, the owners of Meliora are active in the community, are fully transparent on their business and Mike even delivers the products to us! We have a tangible connection to them.  Both of these companies use thoughtfully sourced, non-toxic ingredients, truly biodegradable formulas, ethical production practices and have a genuine commitment to sustainability (not just marketing buzzwords).

Not only does Meliora drop off a 5 gallon bucket of product, but they also pick that empty bucket back up when we’re done, sanitize and reuse it!

By refilling your detergent with brands like these, you’re reducing waste, protecting your health, and keeping your dollars in small businesses that actually care.

Choosing the Best Eco‑Friendly Laundry Options

1. Laundry Soap Nuts – Ten Thousand Villages

  • Form: Dried berry shells from the soapberry tree
    • What? Yes, you read that right. These are dried berries from a tree in the Himalayas. They have a very high percentage of saponin, a chemical compound found in a number of plants, and it is great for cleaning. Saponins remove dirt and oil from clothing when used with water (and the soap nuts even lather up like "real soap").
  • Sustainability Features: 100% compostable, zero packaging waste, all‑natural, fair‑trade sourced
  • Performance: Gentle yet effective for lightly soiled clothes—great for sensitive skin or allergies
  • Price & Value: One bag lasts 3–4 months, making them a very economical option
Why We Love It: Laundry doesn’t get much more natural than this

Note: often you’ll see small brown specks in bar soap. That’s often crushed up soap nuts to help with the lather or even exfoliation for body bars.

2. Refillable Liquid & Powder Detergents

  • Form: Liquid or powder, refilled in‑store.
  • Sustainability Features: Plastic‑free refills, non‑toxic ingredients, biodegradable, cruelty‑free
  • Performance: Tough on dirt, gentle on skin, effective in cold water
  • Why We Love It: Zero waste, transparent ingredients, and supporting small businesses doing it right!

We carry two types of refillable laundry detergent. We have Laundry Powder from a local Chicago company, Meliora, and a liquid soap from another midwestern company, MamaSuds. Both small businesses are doing things the right way, putting people and the planet first!

Plus! These are concentrates and you only need ½ - 1 tablespoon per load! Did you know a lot of what you’re paying for with big brands is actually water?

Why So Many Detergents Are Mostly Water

Many conventional laundry detergents come in large, bulky bottles—not because they clean better, but because the extra size creates the illusion of value.

Most liquid detergents are heavily diluted with water, which is the cheapest ingredient available. This allows companies to reduce the amount of actual cleaning agents while lowering production costs and increasing profit margins. In some cases, less than 10% of the product is made up of active cleaning ingredients.

While water helps with consistency, easy pouring, and even distribution, it also means:

  • You’re shipping and storing heavy jugs of mostly water
  • Transportation emissions are significantly higher
  • Large plastic containers are required, adding to plastic waste
  • You often need to use more product per load to get the same cleaning power as a concentrated formula

Refilling with Meliora or MamaSuds at The Unwaste Shop allows you to reuse your containers again and again, cutting down on plastic while keeping your laundry routine simple and effective.

3. Castile Soap: A Simple, Refillable Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Castile soap is a highly versatile, plant-based soap traditionally made from oils like olive, coconut, or hemp. While it’s often known as an all-purpose household cleaner, it can also be an effective laundry option, especially for lightly to moderately soiled clothing.

  • Form: Liquid, plant-based soap (refilled in-store)
  • Sustainability Features: Biodegradable ingredients, plastic-free refills, multi-purpose product, cruelty-free
  • Performance: Effective for lightly to moderately soiled laundry, hand-washing, and everyday loads; gentle on sensitive skin
  • Price & Value: Another concentrated option where only a small amount is needed per load, making it a cost-effective refill option
  • Why We Love It: A simple, versatile soap that works across your home and supports a true refill-and-reuse lifestyle

Castile soap is a great choice for those looking to simplify their routine and reduce the number of products they bring into their home. Because it doesn’t contain added enzymes, optical brighteners, or synthetic fragrances, it may not be ideal for heavily soiled workwear, but it’s an excellent low-tox option for everyday laundry.

At The Unwaste Shop, castile soap is available at our refill station, making it easy to reuse your container and skip single-use plastic entirely.

4. Laundry Detergent Sheets: A “Gateway” to Sustainable Laundry

Laundry detergent sheets have become incredibly popular and for good reason. They’re lightweight, easy to use, and eliminate bulky plastic jugs. We often think of them as a gateway to more sustainable laundry habits.

For many people, switching from something like Tide Pods to detergent sheets is a meaningful step in the right direction.

  • Form: Ultra-lightweight soap sheets, almost like thick fabric softener sheets.
  • Sustainability Features: Limited packaging, vegan and cruelty-free, made with plant-based ingredients, biodegradable
  • Performance: Surprisingly powerful for their size, cleans well even in cold water.
  • Price & Value: Around $20 for 60 loads, making it competitive with traditional brands.
  • Why We Love It: Perfect for travel, compact storage, and limited packaging. Not heavy so a little less difficult. A great low-waste laundry option.

That said, detergent sheets aren’t perfect. There is a HUGE misconception that these are plastic-free, another example of green-washing in the product marketing space and consumer perception.

Most laundry sheets contain Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), a water-soluble plastic. While PVA dissolves in water, it does not fully biodegrade in many wastewater treatment systems and can contribute to microplastic pollution in our waterways.

Because of this, we view detergent sheets as progress, but not the final destination.

If the choice is between continuing to use conventional products like Tide Pods (which contain concentrated chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and plastic-based components like PVA) or switching to detergent sheets, we’d choose sheets every time.

Kind laundry detergent sheets

Sustainability isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making better choices when we can and detergent sheets can be an important stepping stone toward refillable, truly low-waste options.

We sell Kind Laundry Detergent Sheets in-store and online. We’re also testing a new PVA-Free detergent sheet from Proofed that we are excited is now on the market! We hope to bring this in-store soon. Stay tuned!

Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips

Now let’s dive into a few tips to help you adopt a greener laundry routine—without overhauling your life.

1. Wash Your Clothes Less Often

You don’t need to wash everything after one wear. This is one of the easiest eco-friendly laundry tips to implement. Spot clean and air out clothes to reduce unnecessary cycles, saving water, detergent, and energy.

2. Choose Cooler Water Temperatures

Heating water accounts for nearly 90% of the energy used during a wash cycle. Washing in cold or cool water drastically cuts energy usage and is gentler on your clothes.

3. Add a Microfiber Catching Ball

Microfibers from synthetic clothing shed into waterways during washes. Use a microfiber catcher like the Guppyfriend Bag or Cora Ball to trap those fibers and prevent ocean pollution.

4. Opt for Refillable Laundry Options

Skip the plastic jugs, reuse what you have.

5. Let the Sun Do Its Thing

Line drying your clothes not only saves energy, it extends the life of your garments. Bonus: sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant and whitener!

6. Upgrade to High-Efficiency Machines

If it’s time for a new washer or dryer, look for Energy Star certified appliances. They use up to 50% less water and energy compared to older models.

7. Try Wool Dryer Balls

Ditch dryer sheets! Wool balls speed up drying time, reduce static, and are completely reusable. No waste, no synthetic fragrances. You can add essential oils to them to help leave your clothes smelling extra nice.

8. Avoid Overusing Detergent

Using more detergent doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. In fact, it can lead to residue buildup and more rinsing. Stick to recommended amounts and be sure you’re cleaning your machine!

Final Thoughts

Your laundry habits might feel like a drop in the (ocean-friendly) bucket, but collectively, small changes make a huge impact.

Switching to an eco-friendly detergent and adopting just a few of these eco-friendly laundry tips can help protect the planet, one load at a time.

Try one change this month, whether it’s swapping to a detergent sheet or washing in cold water, and see what fits your lifestyle. And remember, practice makes better! If we can all be just a little bit better, think of how much better we could all be together!
